Bengali literature has several names when it comes to detective characters.

Some of them have even become a part of almost every Bengali's growing up.

We all know how enriched and diverse Bengali literature is! It's considered among the oldest available literature in the world and is divided into three main periods such as ancient, medieval, and modern. There are many iconic characters with whom we can relate and also, sometimes, feel empathetic.

Now, when it particularly comes to detective characters, the Bengali literature surely has no dearth of names. They are a part of almost all Bengalis’ growing up and seem nothing less than superheroes with their strong analytical skills.

Without further ado, let's have a look at the most popular characters among them.

Feluda (Created by Satyajit Ray)

The list has to begin with Feluda as he is a favorite of all Bengalis, from 8 to 80. Created by Satyajit Ray, Feluda or Pradosh C Mitter first appeared in 1965 in a short story called 'Feludar Goyendagiri'. He has a sharp mind, impressive physique, and also an unparalleled sense of humor.

Feluda has been portrayed by many actors on the screen namely Soumitra Chattopadhyay, Sabyasachi Chakroborty, and Tota Roy Chowdhury, among others.

Byomkesh Bakshi (Created by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay)

Sharadindu Bandapadhyay's Byomkesh Bakshi (who calls himself "Satyanweshi" which means truth-seeker) is popular in not only Bengal but also across India. He has a sharp and analytical mind and is a symbol of the "Bangaliyana". He is a true family man, which is unlike most other fictional detective characters.

Byomkesh has been featured on screen a number of times, by numerous impeccable actors including Rajit Kapoor, Uttam Kumar, Abir Chatterjee, Anirban Bhattacharya, and others.

Kiriti Roy (Created by Nihar Ranjan Gupta)

Kiriti Roy's outlook is heavily inspired by that of Sherlock Holmes, the world-renowned detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He is fair, six and a half feet tall, with curly hair which is mostly combed back. He first appeared in the book 'Kalo Bhramar' in the late 20th century and went on to become one of Bengali's favorite detectives. He has a beautiful wife named Krishna, who happens to be a good singer. He solves crimes with his friend cum assistant Subrata.

Kiriti has been portrayed a few times on the big screen as well. Actors who have immortalized the character include Chiranjeet Chakraborty, Indraneil Sengupta, and Priyanshu Chatterjee.

Some other popular detective characters in Bengali literature are Mitinmasi, Dwipkaku, Pandav Goyenda, Shabor Dasgupta, Niladri Sarkar, and others.
