The Beach by Alex Garland

The book tells the story of a British man who travels to Bangkok in search of adventure. He receives a map from a man who commits suicide and decides to follow the instructions to find the secret island. The book was also made into a movie with the same name that is said to have put Thailand on the world’s tourist map.

Jim Thompson: The Unsolved Mystery by William Warren

This book is a comprehensive account of Jim Thompson that gives the readers a first-hand glance into his private affairs and the alleged role as a CIA agent. Jim Thomspon was an American businessman who was known for his foundation of the Thompson Silk Company in Thailand. However, he mysteriously disappeared in 1967 in the Highlands of Central Malaysia, which initiated a massive search that remains an unsolved mystery till today.

The Bridge Over the River Kwai by Pierre Boulle

Published in 1942, the classic war story follows the story of the internal struggle of a prisoner of war during World War II. During that time, the POWs were forced to work on a railway that was being built to aid the Japanese in travelling to Burma from Thailand. The book was also made into a movie in 1957. We highly recommend picking up a copy of this book before visiting the bridge over the River Kwai.

The Orchid House by Lucinda Riley

Follow the story of a concert pianist, Julia Forrester, who has spent her childhood in a grand estate in Wharton Park England where her grandfather grew exotic orchids. Years later, after losing her husband and young child, she returns to this tranquil place. She uncovers a diary and asks her grandmother to learn about the love affair that almost destroyed her childhood estate.
