Every summer, the Earth’s northern hemisphere tilts towards the sun leading to warmer weather and longer hours. Places near or north of the Arctic Circle experience a phenomenon called the Midnight Sun where they experience 24-hour daylight between April and September. That means waking up at midnight and seeing the sun shine bright.

If you want to experience this phenomenon, plan a trip to the below places.

1. Fairbanks, Alaska

Experience nights with no sunsets at Fairbanks in Alaska. Plan your trip to the place from May to July to make full use of its gorgeous landscapes and stunning flora and fauna. From the Denali National Park to the Museum of North, the place has a lot to offer. If you end up waking up in the middle of the night, you can see people hiking and biking. The sun will dip in the horizon for very few hours in the night and be up again for long summer days filled with exploring.

2. Reykjavik, Iceland

While Iceland is known for the breathtaking northern lights during the winter months, the extended summer days transform the landscapes offering views of the seas and hills. The city houses many activities, from National and Saga museums to a rotating Perlan glass dome. The city also observes the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, where the sun sets at midnight and is up again at 3 am. We recommend visiting the place during their Secret Solstice Festival from June 21 to 23.

3. Longyearbyen, Norway

In Longyearbyen forget the night sky, as the sun does not set here for four whole months from mid-April to mid-July. But this also offers an opportunity to partake in all these unique activities like a wildlife-watching cruise where you can spot walrus and whales if you are lucky. Don’t forget to visit the oceans and take in their stunning views.

4. Abisko, Sweden

Abisko in Sweden is home to the Aurora Sky Station, which is the main point to witness the Northern Lights of Sweden. Between the months of late June to mid-July, the station allows riding their scenic chairlift rides up the mountainside. Explore the Abisko National Park and hike up Mount Nuolija to take in the breathtaking views of the arctic landscape. The Midnight Sun is visible from late May to July.
