4 Tips for negotiating your salary

Salary negotiation can be daunting but these tips can help in acing it.

Whether you are starting a new job or looking for a promotion at a current one, we all want to negotiate the salary. But most of us abstain from doing that due to fear. And yes, we understand that salary negotiation can be scary. But it is equally important to realize your worth and get paid for it.

Therefore, we are here to give you a little push. Below are some tips that will help you innegotiating your salary.

Research. Research

The best way to enter salary negotiations is by doing your due diligence with research. Find out how much the market is paying on average to a person with your skillset, knowledge and experience. Apart from that, you should also look at geography. An employee living in a big city will be paid more compared to another living in a rural area at the same position. You can go a step further and reach out to people in the potential company to understand the salary structure.

Ask for more than your desired salary

You have a figure in mind that you absolutely want. But during the negotiation, you should always ask for more than you want. It will show your counterpart that they are getting a better deal since they negotiated down from your original asking salary. And you should never fear asking for too much. The worst that will happen is that they will present a counteroffer. But if you don’t negotiate, you will get nothing.

Go beyond the paycheck

You need to remember that paycheck extends beyond the base salary. If your employer cannot meet the salary demands, ask them for additional perks like a sign-on bonus, relocation bonus or other one-time bonus options. You can even ask for others perks like health insurance and more to make up for the difference between the offer and your desired salary.

Don’t negotiate for the sake of it

Many people are driven by the temptation to prove that they are good negotiators. But this is not the way to go. You should only negotiate if it is absolutely important to you. Do not go and fight over every small thing, as it can come off the wrong way and hamper your ability to negotiate with the company in the future.

Always remember that you should be paid for your worth.
