5 reasons why cricket is the most popular sport in India

From playing in the streets to stadium tournaments, cricket is undoubtedly the most popular sport in India.

People of different cultures, religions and castes stay in India, but the one thing that unites all of them together, is undoubtedly cricket. From kids bunking their classes to play cricket in the afternoon to adults skipping their office to watch Cricket World Cup on screen, cricket is an inseparable part of most of Indian's life. Here, let's find out why cricket is so much popular in this country.

  1. Easy to Play: Unlike many other sports, cricket is a very simple and straightforward sport, making it easily accessible for most of the Indians. All you need is a bat and a ball and then, you can enjoy this amazing game. You don't even need a big space; a room, road or street is enough to play this game. As a large section of Indians belongs to the middle class category, this affordability makes cricket the most popular sport in our country.
  2. Infrastructure: In comparison with other sports, India has a much better infrastructure for cricket. There are a number of coaching centres where anyone (including both kids and adults) can practice cricket and enhance their skills. Also, there's at least one international standard cricket stadium in almost every state of the country. The better and more equipped infrastructures present in India draw millions of young people to play this sport.
  3. Physical Quotient: It requires a certain amount of physical strength or fitness to play other sports like football, hockey or tennis. As most of Indians lack that amount of physical attributes, they are unable to practice those sports on a regular basis. On the other hand, cricket doesn't require much amount of strength, fitness or height and that's why it's more popular among the Indians.
  4. Glamour and Money: Just after cinema, cricket is the most glamorous industry in India. Needless to say, there are a lot of ways to make money from this sport. You can either become a cricketer or simply, do any other job in the industry. Compared to other sports athletes, cricketers in India make more money and live a better lifestyle. So, cricket is always a better career option for sports enthusiasts.
  5. International Victories: Apart from winning the Cricket World Cup twice, India has also achieved victories in several international tournaments like T20 World Cup, ICC Champions Trophy, Asia Cup etc. These outstanding performances of India at the international cricket tournaments influence thousands of Indians to love and play cricket.
In India, cricket is more of an emotion than of a sport. India is home to some world class cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli who inspire millions of kids from every corner of the country to play cricket.
