5 Smallest Airports in the World

The first thought that comes to our mind when we think of airports, is a massive ground!

This thought is perhaps not always correct, since there are airports apart from the massive ones, that are super small. Believe it or not there are airports that have only one runway that is 0.2 miles. You can travel to those countries, not to have a trip to the place, but to visit the airports. Here is a list of a few of such airports, the smallest ones in fact.

Saba Airport

Located in the Netherlands, this airport is known to have the shortest runway, of only 0.2 miles. Windward Islands Airways is the only airline operating in this airport. Also, the shortest route of flight is to Sint Maarten that is just 15 minutes duration. The airport is amid steep cliffs and sea on three sides.

Barra Airport

One of the shortest airports in Europe, Barra airport has just three runways, of which one is 680m. Interestingly one of its runways is made of sand, and the only beach runway worldwide. This airport is quite famous and used by filmmakers getting featured in movies. The airport functions only for a few hours in a day.

Morgantown Municipal Airport

This one is mainly aviation oriented, however it has one commercial airline, the United Airlines which operates regularly. The airport is one of the smallest in the United States, having a runway of just 0.5 miles. The airport has a cafe, a car parking area, and also offers free Wi-Fi.

Moshoeshoe I. Airport

Located in South Africa, this airport includes two runways which are just 1 km and 3 km in length. Although it is considered to be an international airport, surprisingly the only international flight it serves is at Johannesburg.

Tenzing-Hillary Airport

Named after Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, first individuals to climb Mt. Everest in 2953, this airport in Nepal, has been constructed with participation of these two. Being one of the smallest airports around the world, this airport also has the reputation of being one of the most dangerous ones, due to several mishappenings in the airports. Since it has one of the shortest runways, and is surrounded by cliffs, the takeoffs at times become dangerous.

The list is longer than that mentioned. It is intriguing to know how the takeoff and landing operations might occur in such small airports. Do you plan to visit any of these, to experience it for real?
