7 Bengali filmmakers who are working successfully in Bollywood

In Bollywood, a number of visionary as well as skilled filmmakers are from Bengal.

Bollywood, the Hindi movie industry, has always been welcoming to the Bengali talents. Over the years, a lot of Bengali filmmakers have gained enormous acclaim for their exceptional works in the industry. If we just go through the history, would find out several names such as Shakti Samanta, Basu Chaterjee, Hrishikesh Mukerjee, Bimal Roy, Asit Sen and Satyen Bose who literally ruled the industry in 60s and 70s. Now, let's have a look at the contemporary scenarios and discuss about some of those Bengali filmmakers who are truly taking Bollywood to another level.

Dibakar Banerjee: Dibakar Banerjee, a gem of a filmmaker, is known for his unconventional approach towards the craft of cinema. He made his directorial debut with the slice-of-life comedy drama 'Khosla Ka Ghosla' in 2006. Since then, the filmmaker has been wowing us with more such brilliant movies like 'LSD', 'Sanghai', 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshi' etc.

Anurag Basu: Anurag Basu, after making some average standard movies, first came into limelight with the 2006 romantic thriller 'Gangster'. His movies are thought provoking, visually captivating and packed with soulful music. The filmmaker's best works include 'Life in a... Metro', 'Barfi!', 'Ludo' etc.

Shoojit Sircar: Shoojit Sircar is a versatile filmmaker having made some pathbreaking movies over the years. His debut movie 'Yahaan' (2005) was based on the socio-political scenarios in Kashmir. The filmmaker's other movies like 'Vicky Donor', 'Madras Cafe', 'Piku', 'October', 'Gulabo Sitabo' etc. are both critically acclaimed and commercially successful.

Pradeep Sarkar: Pradeep Sarkar is primarily a renowned figure in the advertisement and music video industries. In 2005, he began his filmmaking career with 'Parineeta' which went on to win one National Award along with five Filmfare Awards. Since then, he has made several other movies including the 2014 superhit action drama 'Mardaani'.

Sujoy Ghosh: Sujoy Ghosh is a filmmaker who truly masters the thriller genre of movies. He, after delivering several unsuccessful movies, burst into the limelight with the 2011 thriller 'Kahaani'. 'Anukul', 'Ahalya', 'Badla' etc. are among his most notable works.

Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury: Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury predominantly works in Bengali movie industry. He began his Bollywood career with the superhit courtroom drama 'Pink' in 2016. The movie earned him a lot of acclaim from all around the country. Now, the filmmaker is working on his next Bollywood project named 'Lost'.

Onir: Onir, born as Anirban Dhar, is mostly celebrated for his debut movie 'My Brother…Nikhil' (2005). His 2012 anthology movie 'I Am' won the National Award for Best Hindi Film and Best Lyrics. Among his other works, 'Kuch Bheege Alfaaz' is a beautiful romantic drama which you should definitely check out.

The list also includes filmmakers like Ayan Mukerji, Srijit Mukherji and Konkona Sen Sharma.
