7 Indian kings who were great warriors

India has given birth to a number of kings possessing exceptional warfare skills.

Throughout the rich long history of India, there have been numerous eminent kings in different empires. Amongst them, some are still remembered for being both merciful rulers as well as extraordinary warriors. Be it for conquering other territories or protecting their own kingdoms, these kings came up with a lot of warfare strategies and achieved great victories in the battlefield which set examples for others to follow.

Chandragupta Maurya: Chandragupta Maurya founded the Maurya Dynasty and went on to unify several Indian states into a single empire. He built a huge army and defeated Dhana Nanda, the last ruler of Nanda Empire, by following the strategies of Chanakya. He even defeated the general of Alexander the Great, named Seleucus I Nicator.

Ashoka: Ashoka was an emperor of the Maurya Dynasty, who ruled almost all parts in the Indian subcontinent. Being a valiant warrior, he attacked the state of Kalinga vigorously and conquered it in 260 BCE. But he got very sad seeing the massive deaths in the battlefield and then converted to Buddhism.

Prithviraj Chauhan: Prithviraj Chauhan, a king from the Chahamana Dynasty, ruled much parts in the modern-day north-western India during 12th century. He conquered a number of neighboring kingdoms and even defeated Muhammad Ghori in the First battle of Tarain. But Ghori came back later and defeated as well as executed Chauhan in the Second battle of Tarain.

Sher Shah Suri: Sher Shah Suri, the founder of Suri Empire, was a brilliant strategist and one of the most efficient army generals ever lived in India. He invaded Bengal and defeated Mahmud Shah in 1538. He defeated Humayun, first in the Battle of Chausa in 1539 and later again at Kannauj in 1540, and took control over the Mughal Empire.

Akbar: Akbar was the most successful Mughal emperor who conquered almost all parts in the northern and eastern India. He was a fierce warrior, built a huge army and won numerous battles, most notably the Second Battle of Panipat. He developed several warfare tactics which are now widely being studied across the world.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj: Shivaji was the founder of the Maratha dynasty. Being a valiant warrior as well as strategist, he captured a number of forts and went on to attack the Sultanate of Bijapur and then the Mughal Empire. He is still remembered for his Guerrilla warfare tactics.

Tipu Sultan: Tipu Sultan was the ruler of Mysore, who got involved in war with the Marathas several times, including the Maratha–Mysore War. He stood up against the British and showcased his brilliant military skills in the Second Anglo-Mysore War. But he got defeated by them in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War.

The list also includes Samudragupta, Maharana Pratap, Chandragupta II, Raja Raja Chola Rani Lakshmi Bai and others.
