7 influential women leaders in Indian history

In a male dominated society like ours, it has never been easy for the women to come forward and work alongside the men. But still, some women are daring enough to challenge the stereotypes and set examples for generations to come. Even if we go through the history of India, will find a number of revolutionary women who broke all the barriers and went on to lead thousands of people. As women empowerment is a topic of discussion today, it's high time we should recall those influential leaders and take inspiration from their life stories.

Razia Sultana: Razia Sultana was the only female ruler in the Delhi Sultanate. Being the daughter of Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish, she had interest towards the politics and war since childhood and went on to rule the court of Delhi from 1236 to 1240.

Rani Lakshmibai: Born into a Marathi family, Lakshmibai married Gangadhar Rao, the king of Jhansi, but was soon widowed and became the ruler of the land. During the uprising around 1857, she led thousands of soldiers and fought against the British until her last breath.

Uda Devi: Uda Devi was a Dalit woman who struggled hard to end the oppression towards her community. She played a significant role in the Battle in Sikandar Bagh and led a number of women to fight against the British in 1857. Devi, along with some other Dalit female rebels, are referred to as "Dalit Veeranganas".

Sarojini Naidu: Sarojini Naidu was a social as well as political activist who became the first female president of the Indian National Congress and worked significantly against the British colonial rule in India. She traveled different areas of the country to raise social awareness.

Savitribai Phule: The mother of Indian feminism, Savitribai Phule was a social reformer who worked her entire life to end the practice of gender discrimination in Indian society. She fought for women's right to education and even founded the Mahila Seva Mandal to spread awareness regarding women empowerment.

Aruna Asaf Ali: Aruna Asaf Ali was an Indian Independence activist who is remembered as the fierce leader of the "Quit India Movement" in 1942. Also, she protested and went on a hunger strike against the mistreatment of the political prisoners in Tihar Jail.

Indira Gandhi: Being an eminent politician, Indira Gandhi was an active member of the Indian National Congress. She became the first (also, the only till date) female prime minister of India in 1966. Her political success defeating the male rivals still inspires many women across the country to prosper in the field of politics.

Some other influential women leaders in Indian history were Rudrama Devi, Kittur Rani Chennamma, Matangini Hazra, Lakshmi Sahgal, Phoolan Devi, Sucheta Kriplani and others.
