Marriage is an institution that requires a lot of work to make it, well, work. While there have been a lot of divorces recently, they are not easy to process, especially if it involves the rich and famous. So we take a look at some of the most famous breakups resulting in the most expensive celebrity divorces:
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills
Settlement: $48.6 million
Former Beatle Paul McCartney got married to Heather Mills, a former model and activist, in 2002 but they ended up separating in 2006. However, they officially divorced in another two years and Heather thought of a settlement of $250 million. Eventually, it was finalised at $48.6 million.
James Cameron and Linda Hamilton
Settlement: $50 million
James Cameron, the director of Titanic, got hitched to Terminator star, Linda Hamilton, in 1997. However, only after a year and a half, they divorced in 1999.
Kenny Rogers and Marianne Gordon
Settlement: $60 million
Kenny Rogers got married five times but it was his fourth marriage that cost him a lot. His wife, Marianne Gordon, was married to him for 16 years before they divorced in 1993. The Country music legend had to shell out $60 million to Marianne.
Guy Ritchie and Madonna
Settlement: Between $76 million to $92 million
Pop superstar Madonna divorced British film director Guy Ritchie officially in 2008 after eight years of marriage. Reportedly, it was Madonna who had to pay him a settlement of something between $76 million to $92 million.
Kevin Costner and Cindy Silva
Settlement: $80 million
Kevin Costner got married to Cindy Silva in 1978. The former ended up becoming the most successful—and highest paid—actors in Hollywood, and when they decided to separate in 1994, Cindy was paid $80 million, Forbes reported.
Harrison Ford and Melissa Mathison
Settlement: Between $85 million to $118 million
The two were married for 17 years before they decided to separate in 2000. Melissa filed for divorce in 2001 but it was finalised in 2004 with her settlement estimated around $118 million reportedly.
Steven Spielberg and Amy Irving
Settlement: $100 million
Film director Steven Spielberg and actress Amy Irving were married to each other from 1985 to 1989. They both had signed a prenup but it was found invalid by the court and hence, she was paid a $100 million divorce settlement.
