Ever thought of an underwater city? Here are some cities that are on the verge of submerging into the ocean.

The thought of your home going underwater does make you experience a nightmare for real. Now imagine a whole city getting submerged in the ocean! As devastating as it sounds, global warming has caused almost every coastline to shrink worldwide, and the rising water levels have put many islands and cities under sea level. Some places are slipping away quicker than we realise and need to be visited before they vanish entirely.

  1. Port Royal, Jamaica-
Also known as the wickedest city on earth, Port Royal was one of the New World's busiest trading ports. The earthquake of 1692 caused it to liquefy buildings and streets, and two-third of the town slid into the sea in a matter of minutes, creating the most significant underwater archaeological sites. The city is remarkably preserved and serves as perfect fishing grounds for the port above.
  1. Pavlopetri, Greece-
Often thought to be the model for Plato's sunken city Atlantis, Pavlopetri was a bustling port in the Bronze Age. Located on the southern coast of the mainland, the town slipped under the water level due to gradual erosion. It was found in 1967 in less than 15 feet of water. The archaeologists have deciphered streets, courtyards, and graves to produce a comprehensive digital map of the civilisation at its prime time.
  1. Atlit-Yam, Israel-
Near Haifa, the city remains buried under waves less than a mile from the shore. The scientists could locate the graves along with the skeletons of the quiet town. At 40,000 meters, the site dates from around 7000 BC, making it one of the earliest and largest drowned settlements. The ancient remains lay buried for 9,000 years until 1984, when sand exposed some of the remnants.
  1. Yonaguni, Japan-
Near the Taiwan mainland, the Japanese island is famous for hammer sharks and submerged rocks. The rock structures are remains of the ancient civilisation that have ancient carvings done on them.
  1. Cleopatra's Alexandria, Egypt-
The discovery of the Egyptian queen's ruins in 1998 gained essential insights into Mark Antony and Cleopatra's lives. The shores found statues, columns, sphinxes and temples that belonged to the royals.
  1. Dwarka, India-
Off the coast of Dwarka is one of the ancient ruins that lies 131 feet below the surface. The city was once built on the river Gomati but was later submerged in the sea. It is the lost city of Lord Krishna that makes it a vital pilgrim spot for Hindus worldwide.
