A career in sports for non-athletes

They say that if you make a career in whatever you are passionate about, you won’t have to work for another day. That does poses a problem for all of us who are passionate about sports but unfortunately lack what it takes to become a professional athlete. However, that’s not the end of the road for a career in sports. There are many other avenues in the sports industry where you can work and fulfill your dreams. Read on to find out.

Our interest in sports is not dictated by our ability to play it. We may not have the physical disposition to play a high intensity game of football but that never means we are any less passionate about the game itself. To make a successful career in sports, you don’t always have to be a player. You will be surprised by the number of career opportunities in sports that will let you remain connected to the things you love and contribute to it positively.

Referee/Umpire

Opting to be a referee or an umpire as career will allow you to be as close to a match as possible for non-players. You will play a very important role and at times will be the center of all attention. You will be responsible for resolving all disputes and infractions during a sporting event so will have to be well versed with all the rules and regulations. There are training institutes for referees and umpires all over the country that a quick search will reveal. However, in certain sports like football and basketball, some amount of physical fitness is required although nowhere near athlete levels.

Sports Commentator

Another most recognizable career in sports is being a commentator. Sports Commentator is no longer just a place for retired athletes but is now a much sought-after career option. Other than being in television, you can also opt for radio, internet or even live in the stadium. As a sports commentator or sportscaster, you will be responsible for keeping the fans engaged throughout the event which makes this career option very exciting.

Sports Agent

A Sports Agent lives a fast life, much like a sportsperson he representson the field. As legal representative of a professional sportsperson or even referees, you will be responsible for finding sponsors, negotiating employment deals and endorsement contracts on their behalf. A degree in law and/or business will help you greatly if you want to opt for this career path.

Sports Journalists

This is a perfect career option for the knowledgeable sport buff because sports journalists generally have to do extensive research. A career as a sports writer/reporter will have you cover not just a game or a tournament but all the pre and post-match press conferences and conduct interviews. You will have to process all that and write either articles for a publication or a script for broadcasting. A formal degree in Journalism or Mass Communication is not necessary but is certainly helpful.

Therapist/Psychologist

These are specialized fields in sports that have come up in recent years. As physical therapist, you will be responsible to keep your players fit and injury free. You will have to conduct regular assessments of your player and manage and treat any injury they may have. A Sport Psychologist on the other hand is more concerned about the mental health of a player and keep them battle ready. Both these fields need specialized educational degrees so you will have to plan ahead.
