Adam’s Peak in Sri Lanka, also known as Sri Pada is a 7,359 ft tall mountain in the central highland region of the country. On this holy mountain, all the religions come together as the Christians and Muslims believe this is the place where Adam took his first step on earth, while the Buddhists believe, the first step of Buddha was set here and for the Hindus, it was Lord Shiva who stepped on this mountain peak.

The Adam’s peak is a conical-shaped mountain with a steep side that reaches an altitude of 2,243 meters above sea level. It is the fourth highest mountain in Sri Lanka and has a unique profile, making it look like a stratovolcano and it dramatically stands out from all the other hills. Adam’s peak is a significant watershed for the four main rivers of Sri Lanka, including the longest river, Mahaweli Ganga.

Best time to climb

The busiest months on the trail are December and January when the weather is at its best. The days are dry and hot, thus making the climbing process more comfortable before sunrise. It is not recommended to go during the monsoon months (June to November). The climbing trail becomes more slippery and there is typically a threat from lightning.

What to expect at Adam’s  Peak

You need to follow a few trends if you are hiking in Sri Lanka. Most climbers or hikers arrive at the trailhead at about 2:30 A.M. to begin their hike and to reach the summit before sunrise. The usual duration of the hike to the summit is 3 to 6 hours and most climbers choose to descend around 5:30 to 6:00 A.M. The stairwell near the summit is skinnier and can cause a little bit of a bottleneck sometimes.

Type of climb

What to pack when climbing

While packing for the hike carry a small backpack and a raincoat. Protect your knees from the strain by taking the help of trekking poles, an absolute essential. Pack sweaters or knitwear to keep yourself warm while waiting for the sunrise at the summit.
