All You Need To Know About The Different Types Of Dandruff

Dandruff is a condition that is characterized by flakes of skin coming off from the scalp. These flakes usually appear on the hair shafts or on other parts of your clothing.

Dandruff can occur at any age and in any person. It can manifest due to various reasons. Severe stress, hormonal imbalance, hormonal changes, eating disorders and improper diet are some of the most common causes. Below, we are going to look at different types of dandruff and how to stop them.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

This is characterized by the development of an oily, greasy substance on the surface of the skin. It is one of the most common types of dandruff. It is caused due to an overproduction of oil in the scalp by the glands and skin cells. Excessive oil on the scalp can lead to bacterial and fungal infection, and therefore, the development of dandruff. It has been proven that in cases of severe seborrheic dermatitis, discontinuance of the use of chemical shampoo can alleviate the condition.

Bacterial Overgrowth

This is another reason for the occurrence of dandruff. This may not be life-threatening but it certainly can cause discomfort and embarrassment. The most common symptoms are itching and redness of the scalp. There are several treatment methods available that include the use of anti-dandruff shampoos and oil absorbing gels.

Fungal Infections

These are a very common cause of dandruff and are usually diagnosed when they are accompanied by other symptoms. Usually, doctors diagnose fungal infections of the scalp by performing a biopsy. The doctor will also look for signs of fungal growth on the patient's skin or nails.

In all these types of dandruff, prompt action should be taken so as not to prolong the condition. Dandruff cannot be stopped overnight and hence it is important to identify the trigger so that appropriate measures can be taken to control and eliminate it. Allergies and chemical sensitivities can be effectively managed with the use of shampoos formulated specially for dandruff and other types of scalp conditions.

A medicated shampoo specifically formulated for dandruff is widely used to treat the condition. It contains zinc pyrithione, zinc and selenium sulfide, all of which help in alleviating and controlling the problem. Other products such as soothing gels, lotions, and moisturizers can also be used. These products are usually applied topically to bring relief to the patient. They contain ingredients such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lanolin, and various aromatic substances that all help relieve itching and flaking of the scalp.
