Aman Bhutani: Leadership lessons from GoDaddy CEO

Learn the most important leadership lessons from GoDaddy CEO, Aman Bhutani.

Aman Bhutani has a 20-year career experience in management, technology and leadership roles. He has shown brands like JP Morgan Chase and Expedia the doors to growth and innovation. And now he is the CEO at GoDaddy, a company that empowers startups with tools to succeed.

Below we give you some leadership lessons everyone can learn from him.

  • Leaders need to evolve with jobs
According to Bhutani, as jobs are continuously evolving, leaders cannot lead the same way they have been all their lives. He says, “To be a better leader is to be a better person. You have to strive to be better all the time.”
  • Luck does play a role
Bhutani believes that to be successful in your career you need intelligence, hard work, collaboration, and it also helps to have some amount of luck. He says, “You can knock on a lot of doors, but opportunity has to be behind some of them.”
  • Do the unexpected to succeed
Aman Bhutani’s father was a refugee who left everything behind and had to learn by doing. He mirrored his father, which led to new opportunities to become successful. Therefore, you should do things that set you apart from the crowd and create non-linear value.
  • Humility is key to respect
In most Asian cultures, you fold your hands and bow to say hello and bid goodbye. This is a cultural way of giving and receiving respect by showing humility, which is another lesson he has learnt from his father.
  • Allow yourself to fail
Bhutani believes that losing is a better teacher than winning. He grew around the word, Shokunin, which means a tradesperson who aims to improve their craft every day. Similarly, Bhutani asks people for something they have failed at and says, “I am looking for people who are going to try so hard and push the boundaries they set for themselves to be able to say they have failed.”
  • Improve the person you were yesterday
Apply innovation and invention with yourself to improve on the person you were yesterday. He believes that people have three choices everyday: to be better than the person they were yesterday, to be worse or remain the same.

Apply these leadership lessons to become a natural leader and inspire people on your way.
