April 23 - World Book Day: All You Need To Know

The occasion's main objective is to promote reading, publishing, and copyright.

It goes without saying that books are the best friend we could ever ask for! Reading books is essential to leading a quality life, as it provides us with knowledge, and gives a better understanding of the world. Also, sometimes, books evoke a series of emotions in our souls, and eventually help us become better human beings.

To recognize the importance of books, April 23 each year is celebrated as World Book Day across the globe. The event, organized by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), aims to promote reading, publishing, and copyright.

The event is also known as World Book and Copyright Day or International Day of the Book.

A Brief History

In 1992, Vicente Clavel (director of Cervantes publishing house in Barcelona) first conceived the idea of World Book Day to honor the author Miguel de Cervantes and increase the sales of books.

Four years later, on October 7, 1926, the first World Book Day was celebrated to mark the birthday of Cervantes.

In 1995, UNESCO declared April 23 as World Book Day or World Book and Copyright Day.

Notably, April 23 is the death anniversary of prominent authors such as William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Josep Pla. It also coincides with the birth anniversary of Manuel Mejia Vallejo and Maurice Druon.

The Significance

On World Book Day each year, UNESCO and the international organizations that represent the three most significant sectors of the book industry (publishers, booksellers, and libraries) select the World Book Capital for a one-year period.

Also, on this day, UNESCO spreads the message of books being a weapon to reform society.
