Are social movements supported by technology?

The technological era has successfully brought the world to our fingertips as we connect, send or receive various information at a click.

Nobody can deny that technology has become an essential part of our life. It changed the way we communicate, receive information or spread awareness in today’s world. According to the survey, more than 30 billion youths use these technologies for various purposes every day. As a result, there is an increase in the rate of mobile phone usage across the globe.

With the evolving technology, communication and media technologies are also changing; therefore, strengthening the social movements around the world. Today, social movements are getting new opportunities to spread awareness among the worldwide population. Moreover, advanced technologies, such as high-tech equipment and networking system intertwined with social awareness programs, take it to an elevated level. Similarly, technology has a noticeable impact on the protest activities, mobilising structures and organisational patterns of every social movement.

Today, the application of new-age media gets wholly supported by the advent of internet technology; especially, social media platforms. The popularisation of social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other online websites, gradually introduced us to the networked society. As a result, social movements are becoming more powerful every day.

In recent years, we have witnessed global participation and support for various causes. Technology brought the world together and closer. However, technology intertwined with social movements also promotes negative impacts on society. People are getting dependent on technology and social media every day because they find all the latest gossips, stories and information here. It serves as a mode of information and communication for most people.

There is an old saying that little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Similarly, the information we receive via various social media sites are often biased and telecasts only a single side of the story. It promotes negativity among the citizens because they build their ideology based on a single perspective. As a result, it gives rise to conflicts and debates among all. Did you know today you get paid to share your thoughts? Yes, you heard it right. Today, everybody can share their opinion, even if the statement justifies the actual situation or facts.

The rise in media and technology has helped various social movements to flourish around the globe. However, it might turn to the other side; because it telecasts everything in front of the global audience, irrespective of the news’ sensitivity. Therefore, social movements supported by technology must take essential measures to maintain proper decorum.
