
Ashes: Head to head record
England and Australia have competed in a total of 80 Ashes series, out of which England have won 32 and Australia have won 39 while 9 have ended in draws. The first ever series between the two teams was played in 1876-1877 which consisted of two matches. The series ended in a 1-1 draw. The next series between Australia and England was also played in Australia in 1878-1879 when Australia won 1-0.
England won their first ever Ashes series in 1880 which was played in England. The series consisted of just one match. In 1881-82, the series shifted to Australia again and this was the first time that as many as four matches were played in the series. Australia took advantage of their home conditions and registered a 2-0 victory.
The Ashes was next played in England and consisted of just one match. Australia beat their arch rivals in the game to take the series. The following Ashes series of 1882-1883 was played in Australia and consisted of three matches. England went on to win 2-1, thus registering their first-ever Ashes series victory in Australia.
While the initial period was dominated by Australia till 1883, from 1884 onwards, England went on a winning streak and Australia hardly succeeded in winning a match. This sequence continued till 1896 with Australia winning only one series in between in 1891-1892.
England registered a 1-0 series victory in 1884 and a 3-2 victory in Australia. In 1884-85, the team clean swept the three match series 3-0. In 1886-87, England won 2-0 while in 1887-88, the team won 1-0.
Australia were successful in winning one match in a three-match series played in England in 1888 but England won the remaining two games to win the series 2-1. In 1890, England won 2-0 in the three match series.
Australia somehow managed to break the streak in 1891-1892 when they defeated England by 2-1 in a three match series. However, England were back on a roll and registered series victories in 1893,1894-1895 and 1896.
The ascendancy kept shifting bases until 1989 when Australia won a 6-match Ashes series 4-0 under Allan Border and would have made it 6-0 had rain not played spoilsport. Steve Waugh and Mark Taylor were prolific with the bat while Merve Hughes was sensational with the ball.
Australia went on to win the following seven Ashes series. The last Ashes series between England and Australia in 2019 ended in a 2-2 draw.
