Rooney is the only player to have scored over 250 goals for the Reds.

In football, there is no dearth of talented players. However, if a young player aged 19 is scouted by a club of Manchester United's stature, it means he is a special breed. That is precisely what happened on August 31, 2004.

The Red Devils signed Wayne the "Wazza" Rooney. After impressing the Premier League at Everton, Rooney was a once-in-a-lifetime talent that Sir Alex Ferguson's eyes caught, and he did not want this chap to slip away from his hands.

And thus, on this day of 2004, Rooney arrived at the Old Trafford, the Theatre of Dreams.

Transfer deal

Snatching Rooney from Everton was a challenging job for United. After all, he was a talent never seen before, so United had to grapple with Everton. After weeks of negotiation, Everton finally accepted a 30 million sterling pound bid.

Almost 19 years ago, you could imagine that 30 million was not a meagre amount for Manchester United, but it was worth it for a player like Rooney. At that point, he was the most expensive teenager in the world and signed a six-year deal with the Red Devils.

For the record, the Red Devils had defeated Newcastle United, who were also in the race to grab Wazza's sublime services.

Rooney's statement

After the confirmed deal, Rooney had said, "It was a tough decision to leave Everton, the club I've supported and played for all my life, but I'm excited to be joining a club as big as Manchester United."

A delighted Sir Alex Ferguson had added, "I am very excited, I think we have got the best young player this country has seen in the past 30 years. Everyone is delighted by this signing."

Rooney's stats at United

Before leaving the club on July 9, 2017, Rooney collected 13 trophies, including five league titles, four League Cups, the FA Cup, the Champions League, the Europa League, the Club World Cup, and four Community Shield medals. In 13 years, Rooney registered eight hat-tricks and scored against as many as 58 football clubs.

In January 2017 against Stoke City, Rooney scored his 250th goal for Manchester United, breaking Sir Bobby Charlton's long-standing record of 249 goals. He left the club with 253 goals, the most scored by a United player.

Not to forget, he has appeared in 559 games, which is the sixth highest in United's history, and Rooney sits behind only a few players such as Ryan Giggs, Sir Bobby Charlton, Paul Scholes, Bill Foulkes, and Gary Neville.

Rooney's best

While Wayne Rooney has scored many quality goals, we have a few favourites.

The first one is his debut match on September 28, 2004, against Turkish club Fenerbahce in the Champions League. First game, and Rooney scored a hat trick! What a day it was for all Manchester United fans!

The second one is a longer ranger, because who doesn't love a goal from the centre half of the field? Against West Ham in 2014, Rooney picked up the ball in the middle half and launched a powerful volley to beat the goalkeeper from a massive distance.
