One of the best racers in the history of F1, Ayrton Senna drove different cars for various teams

Three-times Formula One champion, late Brazilian racer Ayrton Senna requires no introduction. The legendary racer began his career in 1984 and within 10 years, he picked up three world titles along with 41 Grand Prix wins and 65 pole positions. Sadly, the racer passed away in 1994 on the racetrack when he lost control of his car and smashed into a wall. In his 10 years of F1 career, Senna drove for four different teams such as Toleman, Lotus, McLaren and Williams. All the four teams borrowed engines from different manufacturers and therefore, Senna drove numerous different F1 cars in his meteoric career. In this feature, we have listed some of the best F1 cars that were driven by the legendary Ayrton Senna.

Toleman TG184- Ayrton Senna’s first year on the tracks of Formula One, he was signed by team Toleman. Driving the TG184 was a tough job for Senna because the car was not a great machine. So poor that Senna had to retire from seven races in the entire season but still, the then-rookie racer grabbed a podium in the dreaded car and was on the verge of winning the famous Monaco Grand Prix. Sadly, a heavy downpour washed away Ayrton’s dream run that day.

Lotus 97T- The picture attached to this article is the Lotus 97T from the year 1985. Wrapped in a black and gold paint scheme, this Lotus 97T represented John Player Special. Under heavy rainfall, Senna wooed the F1 world by winning the Portuguese Grand Prix and then the Belgium Grand Prix. In the entire year, Senna picked up seven pole positions, which turned him into a title challenger.

McLaren MP4/4- His first year with team McLaren in 1988, Ayrton Senna picked up his first World Championship in the MP4/4 car powered by a Honda engine. That year, Senna was absolutely sensational as he won 15 races out of 16 and stood first on the podium eight times in the season along with 13 pole positions. The McLaren MP4/4 was powered by a 1.5-litre V6 twin-turbocharged Honda engine that was tuned to produce a peak power of 650hp. Wrapped in a white and red livery, the car had the sticker of Marlboro sponsorship on the body.
