Horror movies have been an essential part of the evolution of Indian movies post-independence.

There are some excellent horror movies produced in India. The major reason behind this is good box office collection. Believe it or not, people love to get scared or confused in a movie theatre. Movies from the horror genre are the best treats for them. Many directors have tried to make horror movies. Some of them succeeded, and some of them failed miserably. There are many brilliant Indian horror movies for movie buffs. Successful Indian horror movies have beautiful songs, an engaging storyline, and some chilling scenes. Here are some scary horror movies released before 2000.

Mahal, released in 1949:

This is considered the first Bollywood horror movie. Mahal stars Ashok Kumar and Madhubala in lead roles. This movie deals with the concept of reincarnation. Along with scary moments, this movie has some excellent songs. Let me share a trivia regarding Mahal. The success of this movie helped largely to get nationwide attention and status of star for both the lead actors along with Lata Mangeshkar.

Bees Saal Baad, released in 1962:

This is a brilliant horror musical directed by Biren Nag. Biswajit and Waheeda Rahman acted in pivotal roles in this movie. Bees Saal Baad was loosely inspired by the famous novel ‘The Hound Of Baskerville’, written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is truly a haunting movie even after 60 years. Hemanta Mukherjee, the music director of 'Bees Saal Baad', composed and sang the beautiful song 'Bekarar Kar Ke Hum E Yu Na Jaiye'.

Wo Kaun Thi, released in 1964:

This is another brilliant horror movie from Bollywood starring Manoj Kumar.  The protagonist, Anand, faces a series of eerie moments after giving a lift to a mysterious lady in a cemetery. The movie deals with Anand's quest to find the mysteries regarding the lady. This movie gave the Indian audience an eternally beautiful song in the form of 'Lag Jaa Gale'.

Kohra, released in 1964:

This horror film was inspired by Rebecca, an Academy Award-winning film, by ace director Alfred Hitchcock. According to some critics, this is far better than the original version. This movie is famous for its epic climax.

Bhargavi Nilayam, 1964

This is the first-ever Malayalam language horror movie, dealing with some abnormal incidents faced by a novelist in a mansion. This is basically a passionate romantic story with many horror elements.

Raat, released in 1992:

Raat is one of the finest works of Ram Gopal Varma. This is a supernatural thriller. As a kitten got killed, the protagonist (played by Revathy) is possessed by the spirit of the cat. This cult classic will surely bring a spine-chilling experience.

Manichitrathazu, released in 1993:

This is a musical horror film directed by Fazil and starring Mohanlal. Manichitrathazu deals with the abnormal events happening inside a haunted ancestral house of Nakulan (played by Suresh Gopi). The best part about this movie is dealing withthe psychological aspect of humans. Considering the brilliance, this movie was later remade in 4 different Indian languages.
