Aren’t we all sometimes in the mood to watch a cowboy galloping through the yellowish-tinged desert with some western music playing in the background? If you just nodded yes, it means you are a fan of Southern films. But they are not only about cowboys chewing on bail. There’s a sophistication to this genre that many are yet to explore. Classic films like To Kill a Mocking Bird and Gone with the Wind are examples of how the genre has over the years produced some wonderful films. - The Homesman – This Hillary Swank-starrer is what you can call a true feminist Southern film. A powerful performance by the actress who is seen managing her own farm and being good at it too. If for nothing, do watch this film for the stunning visuals!
- Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid – There’s a reason this film won several Academy Awards along with a bunch of others as well. Robert Redford and Paul Newman team up for this buddy film which has some brilliant music and script.
- Driving Miss Daisy – A classic that probably no one should miss. The film explores companionship between Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy. While it doesn’t try to preach much, the film surely touches upon some important socially relevant issues.
- Forrest Gump – Set in Alabama, this Tom Hanks film is a cinematic brilliance, and it also gets into the heart of South. From quotable dialogues to Hanks’ impeccable acting, this movie is at least worth one watch.
