Mahal (1949) holds the distinction of being India's first horror film. Skillfully directed by Kamal Amrohi, the storyline revolves around a young lawyer residing in a haunted house, gradually revealing that the premises witnessed the tragic demise of the builder and his fiancée. As Mahal unfolds, it explores the realms of reincarnation and the haunting power of love. Woh Kaun Thi?

'Woh Kaun Thi?' is a classic horror gem that lingers in the audience's memories due to its compelling narrative, storyline, unforgettable songs like 'Lag ja Gale' and 'Naina barse rimjhim rimjhim,' and stellar acting performances. While it leans more towards mystery than outright horror, the movie's climax is so gripping that it's a must-watch.

On a rainy night, Dr. Anand offers a ride to a mysterious lady who introduces herself as nobody. The eerie vibes kick in when the car wipers stop, yet she guides him through the invisible path. Things get even spookier when she leads him to a cemetery, and magically, the gates swing open while a haunting melody, "Naina barse rimjhim rimjhim," fills the air. The shock hits Dr. Anand when he later discovers his fiancée bears a striking resemblance to the mysterious lady from the cemetery. Ghost or not, the unanswered questions will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout the film. This star-studded movie stands as one of the best Bollywood horror thrillers, ensuring there's never a dull moment!

Bees Saal Baad

Biren Nag's 'Bees Saal Baad' explores the tale of a wealthy Thakur whose actions trigger supernatural repercussions. In Chandanghat, a village girl undergoes a traumatic experience, leading to her tragic demise by suicide. The Thakur meets his end at the hands of the girl's vengeful spirit, and the haunting extends to claim the lives of the Thakur's son and brother.

The narrative unfolds with the return of the Thakur's grandson, Kumar Vijay Singh, from abroad. As he grapples with the ominous family history, Kumar finds himself falling in love with Radha, the daughter of the local doctor. Now, Kumar faces the daunting choice of either abandoning his new home or confronting the daily fear that shadows his existence. 'Bees Saal Baad' made a significant mark at the box office by clinching the title of the highest-grossing Indian film of 1962.

Kohraa

Biren Das delivers another classic with 'Kohraa' (The Fog), a thrilling horror movie adapted from Daphne du Maurier's 1938 novel "Rebecca." After marrying Amit, Rajeshwari discovers from servants that he was previously married to Poonam, whose death remains shrouded in mystery. The revelation that Poonam's ghost haunts the palace raises compelling questions. 'Kohraa' stands as a timeless Bollywood horror gem, making it a must-watch for enthusiasts of the genre.

Do Gaz Zameen ke Neeche

In the gripping tale of 'Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche,' Rajvansh, a wealthy widower, marries Anjili, who harbours no love for him and has her eyes set on his wealth. The plot thickens when Rajvansh rescues Meena, a young woman, and provides her care with the assistance of his loyal servants. Despite developing immense respect for Rajvansh, Meena faces the wrath of Anjili. As the story unfolds, Anjili, in collaboration with her lover, hatches a plan to eliminate Rajvansh. After his demise, the film takes a chilling turn with eerie occurrences. 'Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche' stands out as one of the best Hindi horror movies from the 1970s.

While Bollywood horror films have often struggled to gain the same recognition as genres like romance or action, they possess a unique charm that deserves more attention. Despite not having enjoyed their rightful time in the spotlight, these movies stand out, emphasising a distinct and underappreciated facet of Indian cinema. It's high time to give the horror genre in Bollywood the attention and recognition it truly deserves.
