What’s better than the smell of books? When you enter a bookstore and feel the distinct smell of new books, old ones and even the dusty ones. Books are known to provide not just education but also a level of comfort. Going to a bookstore and flipping through the pages, even reading a bit from some pages, this feeling cannot be replaced by e-books. Although one may say that books on phones are an easier way to read, many love to go to a physical store, hold a book in the hand and maybe meet another book lover in person. So if you too love going to bookstores, here’s a list of some of the famous ones around India…
- Kitab Khana, Mumbai – If you are into the old-world charm, this is a must-visit bookstore for you. It is housed inside a 150-year-old fort. It is a humongous building and has a wide collection of books across several languages. There is also an in-house café where you can sit and enjoy a cup of hot coffee with your favourite book in hand.
- Cambridge Book Depot, Mussoorie – Are you an ardent fan of Ruskin Bond? Then this is where you can meet him and even get your book signed! The author visits this bookstore every week, and thus it has become one of the famous tourist’s spots of the hill station.
- Higginbothams Bookstore, Chennai – Founded in 1844, reportedly this is the oldest book store in the country that is still standing. The store even has a brilliant collection of many out-of-print books. Apart from that, their normal book collection is also enormous.
- Literati Book Shop and Café, Goa – While many flock to Goa for the sandy beaches and the party scenes, this is a place one shouldn’t miss out on. And it is also a paradise for all second-hand book lovers. This historic Indo-Portuguese villa is stocked with rare books and lovely smelling coffee.
- Oxford Bookstore and Cha Bar, Kolkata – How can one mention books and forget to include the City of Joy in the list? This book store was established in 1921 and it still stands tall. They don’t just have books. You can find several other home products that you can buy. There is also a small café that serves food and coffee.
