City Again: Six Titles in 10 Years

On the last day of the Premier League, City made a dramatic comeback to clinch the Premier League title

Premier League club Manchester City has defended their league title by making a dramatic comeback against Aston Villa on the last day of the Premier League. The team guided by Pep Guardiola started poorly against Aston because Villa drew the first blood by scoring a goal in the 37th minute while City failed to open their account in the first half.

In the second half, Coutinho scored a second for Villa in the 69th minute. At that point, almost every football follower thought Liverpool would win the league because they were second on the league table and were also on the verge of winning their final game against Wolverhampton. However, Gundogan rose to the occasion and scored two goals whereas Rodri added one to seal the fates of both the teams.

What is the importance of this article?

The Premier League is the toughest domestic football league on earth and therefore, dominating the league for years is not everyone’s cup of tea. However, since 2011, Manchester City has turned the tide in its favour; thanks to the finances provided by Sheikh Mansour and the brilliant tactics of Pep.

The last time a team dominated the league in such manner, it was City’s rival United under Ferguson’s watch. No, we are not comparing Fergie to Pep but Guardiola has certainly set a benchmark of his own with City in the Premier League.

Four titles in five years, six in 10

In the past five years, Manchester City has made the Premier League a league of its own. Consistency and pure dominance have become the mantra of City because since 2018, the club has picked up four titles in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 (six years) whereas in 2020, City finished second. Not to forget, in 10 years since 2012, the Citizens have picked up six trophies; one against Ferguson’s United.

Wins this season

To win the Premier League title again, City won 29 matches out of 38. The club under Guardiola’s leadership merely lost three games and drew a total of six. They collected 93 points whereas their closest rival Liverpool lost the title race by a single point.

Guardiola’s words after the win

After another epic adventure, an ecstatic Guardiola said, “We are legends. We will be remembered. This group of players are absolutely eternal in this club.”
