Gaming has its own set of terminologies. End of the match calls for ‘gg’ meaning good game or ‘wp’ meaning well played. Mid game conversations are also filled with gaming jargon that even gamer should be acquainted with.
With so many games out there, it is a possibility that each game has its own set of terminologies. Multiplayer games call for select jargon to communicate with others in a game. Even if its not in-game, there are a few common terms used in the gaming community, just the basic ones.
Here are a few common gaming terms.
Grinding: Grinding is working at a game, usually taking up repetitive tasks everyday to achieve a level or to get good at the game. It can also make you spend unusual long hours at a game and that’s called grinding.
Ping: Gamers talk about good pings and bad pings. What exactly is ping? Ping, in gaming, can be responsible for getting a shot, getting hit, or hitting someone else etc. It is the time taken (usually counted in milliseconds) for the information to travel to and back from the game’s server. Lower the ping, the better it is. High ping would cause a noticeable lag.
AFK: Stands for away from keyboard. AFK means the player is temporarily unavailable.
Camper: Someone who camps a certain site in the game is called a camper. The player may camp to get a jump on other players instead of moving about in the map.
Nerf/Buff: A buff is something that makes certain aspects in the game stronger. Usually refers to the abilities or weapons for a character. A nerf is the opposite. Nerf means the changes that makes them weaker than before. Buff/Nerf is usually done after multiple reports come in complaining about them.
OP: Short form for overpowering. Certain aspects in a game can be considered overpowering.
Hitbox: The hitbox refers to the imaginary shape that is used to detect collision in game. Usually seen in game where one characters hits another.
Glitch: A glitch is a bug due to unintentional issue in the game’s coding. Glitches can lag the game, or make the character behave weird, movements can also be affected or even cause freezes in the game.
Sandbag: Sandbag is when your own teammate causes you to stop mobbing by blocking your movement, thereby resulting in injury or death.
Stream Sniping: Stream sniping is when streamer’s stream is being watched by another player who is in the same games as the streamer. Stream sniping is usually done to gain an upper hand on the streamer by following their movement in game.
