Common Thai phrases to know before visiting the country

Remember these phrases while getting around in Thailand.

When you're planning a trip to Thailand, it's always a good idea to learn some basics of their local language. Although not mandatory, but mastering the common phrases will surely make your entire trip a lot more fun. You will be able to interact with the local people without much hassles and also get a better insight into their culture as well as lifestyle. And trust me, the Thai people get equally excited when the foreigners speak their language. So, below we have gathered some simple yet useful phrases which you should definitely read up before embarking on a trip to the Land of Smiles.

For Greeting: If you can remember the basic Thai greetings, then be sure to get some unforgettable experiences in Thailand.

Sa Wat Dee - Hello, Sabai Dee Mai? - How Are You, Sabai Dee - I'm Fine, Khop Koon - Thank You, Khot Hort - Sorry, Kor Tot - Excuse Me, Mai Khao Jai - I Don't Understand, Mai Pen Rai - Never Mind, Chai / Mai Chai - Yes/No, Lah Gorn - Goodbye etc.

For Addressing: Well, this is certainly very important, especially when you are visiting the small-town areas. To address someone, always use the correct term, otherwise it will be disrespectful to them.

Pom/Chan - I (Male/Female), Kun - You, Kao - He/She/They etc.

For Shopping: Thailand is abode to plenty of vibrant markets here and there. Also, these are the places where you get an opportunity to showcase your bargaining skills. So, speak in the local language to get better experiences while shopping.

Tao Rai? - How Much, Phaeng Mark Pai - It's Too Expensive, Ao Annii - I Want This One etc.

For Transportation (Taxi/Bus/Tuk Tuk): You cannot depend solely on the English language while traveling across Thailand. So, do remember the following phrases to give directions to your driver.

Leow Sai - Turn Left, Leow Kwa - Turn Right, Trong Pai - Go Straight, Krab Lot - Turn Around, Hai Chah Long - Slow Down, Jort Tee Nee - Stop Here etc.

At The Restaurant: No trip to the Land of Smiles is ever complete without exploring the mouth-watering Thai cuisines. Also, the whole experience gets much better when you ask for food, be it at a restaurant or a local street stall, in the native language.

Hee Yoo - I'm Hungry, Chawp Pet Noi - I Want the Food Spicy, Mai Phet - I Want the Food Non-Spicy, Mai Sai Nam Tam - No Sugar, Aroy - Delicious, Nam - Water etc.

Last but not the least, always use the words Krap (for men) or Ka (for women) at the end of every sentence, to show some respect to the other person.
