Bringing the period drama aptly to scree, his movies are a delight

British film director Joe Wright is known for his intense and distinguished adaptation of literary works. The few literary adaptions that Joe Wright has directed have been instrumental in bringing to the screen stories that otherwise might have been lost in the pages. The unique part of Joe Wright's direction remains his skill of portraying a period drama with prestige, elegance, and accuracy. So here are a few Joe Wright movies that you must watch if you want to see the period of yore come alive from pages to the screen.

Pride & Prejudice

A movie adapted from the famous author Jane Austen's novel of the same name, the Joe Wright film Pride & Prejudice stars Keira Knightly and Matthew Macfadyen in the lead role. As it is in the book, the story revolves around a strong female character who breaks free from her insecurities' shackles. Known for his camera plunging angles, Wright, in his narration of Jane Austin's romantic comedy, brings alive the 16th-century charm and storytelling. And just like Jane Austin's telling with an unexpected ending, Joe Wright's depiction also brings to fore a cathartic yet sweet ending.

Atonement

Another of Joe Wright's directional is an adaption from author Ian McEwan's novel of the same name – Atonement. Starring James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, and Saoirse Ronan, this is a romantic war drama film. The subject of the narration and its depiction on screen chronicles a crime followed by its consequences that are narrated over six decades. In the 1930s, the film shows beauty, love, chemistry, jealousy that eventually tears apart everything.

The Soloist

This2009 Joe Wright film is based on the true musician Nathaniel Ayers, who at one point in his career developed schizophrenia and eventually became homeless. The two have delivered astonishing performances, starring Jamie Foxx as Ayers and Robert Downey Jr as real-life L.A. Times columnist Steve Lopez. Unfortunately, however, the film didn't seem to impress the audience and the critics.

Darkest Hour

If not a novel adaption, Wright makes sure to work on original scripts all depicting the era of the yore. This 2017 drama by Joe Wright is another period film revolving around Winston Churchill's becoming of the British prime minister in 1940. The film chronicles Winston Churchill's early days as Prime Minister of the U.K. during the Second World War. The film also considers historical political events during Churchill's tenure, such as the 1940 War Cabinet Crisis of his refusal to make a peace treaty with Nazi Germany.
