Dos and don'ts of oiling your hair

Oiling your hair goes beyond tapping on your scalp and snuggling fingers in your hair.

Our mothers and grandmothers have told us a zillion times about the importance of oiling our hair. And yes, we have followed their advice.

Oiling your hair regularly can nourish and strengthen your hair, giving its health an instant boost. But this can also be tricky; as if you do not oil your hair correctly it can cause damage leading to hair loss and breakage.

But we are here to help you. Below we give you some dos and don’ts of oiling your hair that you should follow.

Must-dos of oiling your hair

  • Apply oil to your hair before washing to keep it hydrated and frizz-free.
  • Warm the oil before applying to make them penetrate well inside your scalp. The heat will help break down the oil molecules, which will give better nourishment.
  • To give your hair the correct nutrition, apply the oil well on your scalp also, not only the hair.
  • Always apply oil on your scalp first and then apply from roots to the end.
  • To experience the miraculous benefits of oiling, apply it at least twice a week.
  • Use your fingertips or cotton pad to help increase oil penetration and avoid causing damage.
Don’ts of oiling your hair
  • Do not apply oil to an oily scalp, as it increases the chances of you developing an infection. Also, avoid applying oil regularly to your hair if you have pimples on your forehead.
  • Do not soak your hair and scalp with oil. Less is more when it comes to oiling your hair.
  • Do not keep oil on your hair overnight. Wash is after 3 to 4 hours of application.
  • After applying the oil on your hair, do not use any other hair products, as it can block the penetration of oil.
  • Do not tie your hair very tightly after massaging your scalp. This is because the action of massaging opens up the hair cuticles, which increases the chances of hair loss if ties too tightly.
  • As noted above, hair cuticles open up while oiling. Therefore, avoid combing your hair post-oil to reduce breakage and hair loss.
Remember and follow the above dos and don’t to reap in all the benefits of oiling. And soon you will have thick and luscious hair.
