Dos and don’ts to ensure laptop longevity

Tips to ensure your laptop stays fit

We use laptops every day, especially to work from home. Whether it’s for Google Meet call or streaming content online, a laptop is an essential part of our life. Ensuring the longevity of the laptop is not that hard and is easily doable.

Here are the dos and don’ts to ensure the longevity of your laptop.

  1. Do follow the 80/20 rule – Meaning your battery should not go below 20% or above 80%. Keeping it on charge overnight is harmful as well.
  2. Do not eat around your laptop – Food particles might spill on the keyboard and harm the hardware. Drinking around laptops is also not good as it risks spillage.
  3. Do have a protective cover - When not in use, make sure your laptop is placed inside the cover to protect from pets, children and dust particles.
  4. Do not treat your battery like a light switch - It is a big no-no. Taking the battery out and inserting it again can be used as a reboot technique, but it is very harmful to the laptop.
  5. Do keep your laptop clean - Brush the screen and the keyboard with laptop kits once in a while to avoid dust to gather on your laptop. Also, if you are equipped enough, get hardware clean as well.
  6. Do not keep other electronics around - The magnetic interference from electronic devices can mess up laptops so easily. Yes, even keeping our phones near the laptop can be harmful.
  7. Do keep enough memory - Not having enough RAM can make your laptop slow. Upgrading your memory can be done pretty easily. So, if you’re planning to have tons of images, movies on your laptop, make sure you have enough RAM and enough space in your drives. You can always choose to invest in a hard drive.
  8. Do know how to carry an open laptop - Close the laptop screen and lift it by the front or the rear. Carrying an open laptop can cause unnecessary pressure on the hinges.
  9. Do not block the fan vent - The insides of a laptop get heated up and the fan vent helps to maintain the temperature. Blocking the vent can cause serious damage inside. To ensure this doesn’t happen, invest in a cooling pad or a laptop cooler.
  10. Do opt for servicing semi-regularly – This can save heaps of unforeseen problems in the future and ensures a smooth running of the laptop.
