Do’s and don'ts to maintain a healthy heart

A few healthy lifestyle changes can aid in maintaining a healthy heart.

Heart diseases are the result of lifestyle habits but can be easily prevented by maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine. But that does not mean you can’t enjoy the occasional burger. You absolutely can!

But what we are suggesting is making some minor changes that will keep your heart healthy and fit.

Below we give you a list of do’s and don’ts for maintaining a healthy heart.

The Do’s

  • Healthy diet
Maintaining a healthy diet means eating more veggies and fruits; eating whole grains; limiting consumption of saturated fats, and keep in check your daily sodium intake.
  • Cardio
Cardio should be a vital part of your daily exercising routine. It is recommended to partake in 20 minutes of intense cardio 3 days a week or 30 minutes of moderate cardio 5 times a week.
  • Sleep
Getting a good night’s sleep is very important for your heart and overall health. You need to have a consistent sleep schedule. For example, sleeping in during the weekends actually increases the risk of heart diseases, obesity and diabetes.
  • Good posture
A good posture is important to maintain your breathing capacity and circulation. It also helps you maintain a positive mental attitude, which will provide you with a happy heart.
  • Positive emotions
To improve your blood pressure and overall heart health, you need to remain positive. Small things like listening to upbeat music, daily hugs and laughing until you cry can improve your mood significantly.

The Don’ts

  • Sitting for long periods of time
Sitting at your desk for 7-8 hours at a stretch increases your risk of heart diseases. Therefore, get up and walk around every hour or half an hour. Take a call standing up or walk up to your colleague to talk to them, instead of emailing.
  • Bottling up negative emotions
Stress plays an important role in heart health. So don’t bottle up all the frustrations and negative emotions. Release it by hitting the gym or talking to a friend you trust.
  • Missing dental appointments
Research has shown that your teeth and gums can reveal signs of your heart health. So, it is important to brush and floss and visit the dentist regularly to get a professional cleaning done.

Start implementing the above do’s and refrain from the don’ts to keep your heart healthy and happy.
