The Human brain is one of the most complex organ and still has many unearthed mysteries about it. However, researchers and scientists have been able to explain many facts about the physical and intellectual dimensions of the human brain. Here are seven fascinating facts that you should know.

  1. Human brain is mostly water and heavier than you think: An average adult brain weighs 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms). It’s one of our fattiest organ made up of fat, protein and is 75 percent water!
  2. It grows tremendously and can continue to form connections in adulthood: Normal infant human brain weighs around three-quarters of a pound and grows at least four times from infancy to adulthood. It also continues to form new neuron connections throughout human life.
  3. Endless network length within our brains: Only 10 percent of the brain comprises of 100 billion nerve cells or neurons. This neuron spreads to 100 trillion trigger points called the neuron forest. The brain vessels would cover the distance around the earth four times!
  4. Brain is a significant energy user: At merely 2 per cent of the body’s weight, the human brain needs 25 percent of body glucose and 20 percent body’s oxygen. This requirement tops at 50 percent at times when you are thinking hardest!
  5. Is it normal for the mind to wander aimlessly: Yes, the parts of the brain that control unrelated task activities like daydreaming are always active when the brain is in the rest state or not handling a challenging task. This mind-wandering was studied in a joint study done at Harvard University.
  6. Brain gets bored quickly: Researchers found that you need something that sparks your attention every 10 minutes after which the attention starts to wander. But it never loses focus on survival instincts. It is continuously working and making decisions to keep you safe!
  7. The more it is exercised, the better it gets: Studies suggest that adults participating in mind-challenging activities are 63 percent less likely to suffer from dementia in future. Moreover, physical activity and fitness also reduce the chances of developing brain-related complications.
