Engrossing facts about Labrador Retriever

Here are some of the most fascinating and engrossing facts about the lovable and hard-working pups.

If you love dogs then there is no chance that you have to hear or fall in love with these lovable pups. They are warm, friendly, hardworking and so lovable that you can’t help but cuddle them with hugs and kisses. Although they are known to be family pets, they are also known to work in many other fields such as service dogs and search and rescue missions, hunting, etc. Because they are so popular, you can easily find them in your local animal shelters and can easily take them home. But to do so let us educate ourselves more about these lovable creatures.

No, they are not from Labrador

The first thing that comes to our mind when we hear about Labradors is that maybe because of their names they might be from Labrador in Canada. No, they are not from Labrador, instead, they are originally from Newfoundland. They are the result of cross-breeding between local water dog breeds with Newfoundland’s dogs. And the result was St. John’s water dog which is now an extinct breed that had white marking on its face. After further cross-breeding and refinement, the modern-day Labrador came into existence.

They got their name from the Earl of Malmesbury

The Earl took these crossbreeds with him to England from Canada and started referring to them as his Labrador dogs in the year 1887 (Newfoundland and Labrador are quite close geographically which leads to many referring to them as one place). Some historians also believe that the name came from the fact that these dogs were often seen swimming in the Labrador Sea, hence the name.

You can get more than one colour pup in a single litter

No matter what their parent’s coat colour is, a single litter of pups can be of many colours. A single litter can have chocolate, black even yellow puppies. This is due to the two genes that can cause pigmentation of the coat and that’s why the variation is quite common like we have different hair colours in a human family.

One Labrador held the esteemed post of Mayor of Sunol, California

Interestingly, a black mix Labrador named Bosco was elected as honorary mayor of Sunol, California in 1981. He won the election against human candidates by using a catchy slogan which went, a bone in every dish, a cat in every tree, and a fire hydrant on every corner. He retained this post until his death in 1994.
