Essential Safety Rules You Should Teach Your Kids Before Leaving Them Home Alone

Once you feel you are ready to begin letting your child stay at home alone, it is critical to establish some essential safety rules for them. So let's get started!

If you think your little one is ready to stay at home alone and you are willing to give it a shot, there are some safety rules that you need to ingrain in your child to ensure his safety while you are away. Check out the precautions you must take to avoid accidents at home. Below are some essential safety rules that you should teach your children before leaving them on their own at home.

Teach them first aid

Teach first aid to your child, and remember to keep a first aid kit at their disposal and review it with them. Help your little one distinguish between an emergency and a minor inconvenience to help them handle the situation better.

Establish an emergency plan

Before leaving your children home alone, thoroughly inspect all your safety devices at home. Check if all the smoke detectors and smart locks are functioning properly. Teach your child what they should do if the fire alarm goes off when they are alone. Note down emergency helpline numbers prominently and teach your kid to dial the number if they face any trouble.

Teach them judicious use of phone

If your child gets home from school while you are away, ask him/her to ring you as soon as they are home. Apart from that, restrict unnecessary phone usage. Install caller ID on your phone and ask your kid to answer the phone if only they are from known numbers, and other calls can be left unanswered and allowed to go to the answering machine.

Allow cooking to a minimum.

Keep non-messy, dry snacks or ready-to-eat noodles for your child. Ask them to keep cooking to a minimum. At the most, you could allow them to heat their food. Remember to specify the utensils they can use to do the same, and make sure your child knows how to safely operate a hot plate or a microwave oven.

Keep knives and sharp tools locked away.

Sharp objects like scissors, repairing tools, and knives can be harmful to children. They might want to touch or use them out of sheer curiosity. You know such objects are not playthings, so keep them locked away to ensure the safety of your little one.

It is quite a major step to leave your child home alone. However, with the correct safety rules in place, it is not impossible to achieve.
