Everything about high latitude

Thinking of high latitude? The place of midnight sun? Then this article is for you.

To discuss this point, first we need to know what is called high latitude? In the exact middle of the earth, there is an imaginary line which has divided the earth into two equal halves, this is called the equator. The further you go to the north or south from the line of equator, you are going towards the high latitude. The equator is considered 0 degrees. The area between the arctic circle which is 66 degrees 33 minutes north and the north pole which is at 90 degree north is called the high latitude of the Northern Hemisphere.Parts of Canada, Alaska, Europe and Asia are in the high latitude of the Northern Hemisphere. The high latitude in the SouthernHemisphere is located between the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole where Antarctica is situated.

There are some interesting facts about high latitude climate, ambience and way of living in both hemispheres which you won’t be able to find in Tropical zones of the Earth. Some of these fun facts are discussed below-

High latitude observes midnight sun

In both the latitudes the timings and the conditions of sunrise and sunset are a bit different from the other parts of the earth. There, in winter the sun does not climb above the horizon and in summer the sun never goes down below the horizon which means it creates 24 hours of sunlight. Because of this fact you can see the sun in the middle of the night which can be an exceptional experience. To summarize this point, it can be said that the closer you stay to the high latitudes the longer the period of darkness and light stays.

Animals are large in size

Animals that live in the high latitude are larger in size than their tropical and sub- tropical species. According to an article by Steven C. Pennings, and Thomas H. Carefoot published in 2010 the larger size is because of the high nutrition that they get from the food. The food of these areas is more nutritious in comparison to the other parts of earth. Another important feature is that they are able to keep the temperature within, as a result this extreme cold is tolerable for them.

Long live and slow growth

After a long time of research, two facts have emerged. One is the living beings of the both high latitudes have longer lives than others and they grow up very slowly. That means, the more you stay near the equator, the pace of the growth is high.

These are some interesting facts about high latitudes. What is your idea about these places?
