F1 101: How Points are Awarded?
In every race, F1 drivers and constructors are allocated points based on which they pick up the world championship title
The fans who watch Formula One regularly are informed of the point system of the world’s fastest motorsport. However, viewers who are new to the sport may not be aware of the point system. In this article, we have explained the Formula One point system for those unversed souls.
Drivers’ Championship- One may not be familiar that there are two different title championships in Formula One. One is the drivers’ championship where the racers fight for points to win the World Championship title whereas the second one is the constructors’ championship where the teams (constructors) are awarded points depending on the number of points snatched by their two drivers in every race throughout the season. At the end of the season, all the points are combined and the constructor with the highest points is conferred the constructors’ championship.
Back to the drivers’ championship, the racer who comes first in a race is awarded 25 points. The racer who secures the second position is given 18 points and the racer who finishes in the third position is awarded 15 points. The fourth-placed racer receives 12 points whereas the fifth-placed racer gets 10 points. Sixth and seventh positioned racers are awarded eight and six points, respectively. The eighth, ninth and tenth position racers receive four, two and one points. If a racer sets the fastest lap record on the race day and also finishes in the top 10, he is bestowed an extra one point. At present, Sir Lewis Hamilton holds the record of scoring the highest number of points by an F1 driver with 3,872 points.
Constructors’ Championship- For the new viewers, understanding the constructors’ championship may prove somewhat difficult. To begin with, there are two racers in each team (constructor). The number of points achieved by both the drivers of a team establishes the team’s ranking. Let us give you an example.
As we know, team A has two drivers. One driver comes first and receives 25 points whereas the second driver comes seventh and receives six points. Together, they receive 31 points. Now, imagine there is a team B. One driver comes second and takes 18 points whereas the second driver finishes third and makes 15 points. Together, they collect 33 points. Therefore, team B secures the constructors’ title.
