F1 101: Most Wins at Sochi Autodrom

Winning the Russian Grand Prix is no piece of cake. However, some racers have won it several times during their Formula One career

In the country of Russia, the Sochi Autodrom is a historic Formula One racing circuit that is 5.848 kilometres in length with 18 turns. The first Formula One race at the Sochi was held in 2014 and since then, it has become a regular track in the Formula One calendar. One of the most challenging tracks in the Formula One calendar, winning at the Autodrom, is no piece of cake. However, in the last seven seasons, several drivers have won at Sochi numerous times. In this feature, let us take you through the drivers who have won at Sochi the maximum number of times. 

Lewis Hamilton- British driver and seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton has won at the Sochi Autodrom the maximum number of times. The coveted driver has won the Russian Grand Prix four times. His wins were picked up in 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019. Lewis Hamilton has not only won the Russian Grand Prix the maximum number of times, but the legend also holds the record for the fastest lap time at Sochi. In the 2019 Russian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton in Mercedes AMG F1 W10 EQ Power+ completed a lap in 1:35.761; a record which is intact to date. 

Valtteri Bottas- Finnish driver Bottas, who is the teammate of Lewis Hamilton and a racer for the Mercedes AMG F1 team, is the second individual to win at Sochi the maximum number of times. The first win of Bottas came in the 2017 championship, whereas the second win was secured in the 2020 season. At present, Bottas is in the news because the man is set to leave Mercedes in the upcoming season of 2022. In 2022, Bottas will replace Kimi Raikkonen who is set to retire from the world of Formula One at the end of this season after spending 19 long years and winning one World Championship. 

Mercedes AMG- Now that we are done with the drivers, let us inform you about the constructors. No other team has ever won a race at the Sochi apart from Mercedes. In total, the team has won nine times at Sochi: 1913, 1914, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020. For the unversed souls, Mercedes AMG has won all the constructors’ titles since 2014 and in the hybrid era, they are a dominant force.
