Facts About the Thai Women's League
Although not an age-old ancient football league, the Thai women’s league has gained enormous reputation among the Thai football fans
In Thailand, the T1 league is the most prominent domestic football league. A men’s football league, it has been praised by several legends from the football world. Not to overlook, the T1 league has also gained recognition from many football associations since its outset. On the contrary, women’s football in Thailand is still at a nascent stage. Women’s football league did not exist in the country for a long time, and it was only in 2009 when the Muang Thai Women’s League was formally organized.
Although, a reader would be amazed to learn that in the FIFA World Cup tournaments, the women’s team of Thailand has consistently performed better. As of now, the official FIFA ranking of the Thai women’s national football team is 39. Not to forget, the rank has never gone down below 40 and on one occasion; the team secured the 29th position in the world. Compared to the women’s team, the men’s team’s present rank is 106. Oh, and did we mention that the women’s national team also defeated Ivory Coast in the 2015 FIFA World Cup? In short, the women’s team has done well and the credit for that must be addressed to the Muang Thai Women’s League.
Founded in 2009, the Muang Thai Women’s league comprises 16 teams in total. In the top tier league, eight teams take part whereas there is also a second-tier league. In the second-tier league, eight small teams fight to gain a place in the top tier league. Not to forget, the last positioned team in the top tier is relegated to the second-tier league. Note that only one team is relegated from the top tier to the second-tier league. Therefore, only one team from the second-tier league gains promotion to the top tier league.
Due to a lack of teams, the Thai Women’s league is played over two legs. In the first leg, all eight teams play seven matches. After the first leg is over, the league is paused for a few months. The second leg is played after few months which decides the winner. The Thai Women’s League is not played in the traditional league format but as a knockout competition format. Since the inception of the tournament, BG Bundit Asia has been the most successful team with four title wins. Last but not least, BG Bundit also won the 20/21 edition of the tournament
