The Indian Ocean situated in the bottom of the Indian subcontinent is the third largest ocean in the world and it covers approximately 19.8% of the surface of the Earth.

It is surrounded by a number of continents

The Indian Ocean is so strategically located that it is surrounded by not only the Indian Subcontinent, but also Africa, Australia and Antarctica. Surprisingly the marine life is not in abundance

This limited marine life in the ocean is caused by higher water temperature of the ocean. Compared to other oceans, the water in the Indian Ocean is the lowest and such is the scenario mainly because of the higher evaporation rate. Since the water is the warmest among all the oceans, the evaporation rate is high and this also makes life impossible for marine life.

Highest concentration of ports is in this region

Since the Indian Ocean is shared by a lot of countries, the number of ports on this ocean is the highest among other oceans. Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai are the three major ports of India that share a connection with the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka, South Africa, Indonesia and Australia are the other countries that have ports on the Indian Ocean.

Indian Ocean has a rich oil deposit

The Indian Ocean is one of the largest contributors of mineral resources in the world. Among the mineral deposits and the rich navigational routes, the ocean offers oil which accounts to nearly 40% of the total production of the world.
