Do you remember making or hearing ghost stories about your school during childhood? Arguably the most popular college urban legends are about haunted universities and schools. Almost every university in the world which is more than 100 years old has its own ghosts. Let’s talk about some of the ghost stories surrounding famous universities which became famous.
Even though different colleges have different legends concerning ghosts, the main patterns are usually very similar. Possibly the most widespread versions of the horror stories are the rumors about students who committed suicide in school or college. People make these stories for the sake of amusement and before them knowing, they spread like wildfire among the students. It is interesting to note that these stories remain alive for decades as they keep passing on from generation to generation.
Suicide stories
In the beginning of 20th century, a young girl took her life by drowning in a swimming pool at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. The girl committed suicide after she found out she was pregnant. Students believe that her spirit still roams in the English building of the university. Another similar myth exists at the Emmanuel College in Cambridge where a student hanged himself many years ago apparently still walks the corridors of the building. Similar stories can be found in and around India because they originate from old tales and novels.
Heidelberg University
Another famous urban legend which is spread around many colleges around the world is about ghosts of former university professors, yes, it exists everywhere. Such a legend is known to be exists at Heidelberg University in Germany. It is said by many that during the Nazi era, many communist or Jewish professors at the university were sent to detention camps and many of them have apparently returned to their old workplace to haunt the place forever. While students haven’t actually seen them , they have reported that chalkboards in these professors old lecture halls ‘self-erase’, or have mysterious words written on them.
Jamia University
JamiaMilliaIslamia, a university located in New Delhi, too, has a ghost story around it. According to many, there is a building which was old student union’s office and during night you can hear a sound of anklets at regular intervals. There is no reason behind where does the sound come from there, but some say that back in time there was a fight between two groups and one of them fired a bullet and a boy died but this incident leaves no connection with the sound logically. However, several students claim that they have heard the noise at night.
