The foods we choose to consume can have a major impact on our physical health and mood, which can cause us to feel more anxious. Certain foods, according to experts, can trigger inflammation and anxiety in some people. Here are a few foods to avoid, especially if you suffer from anxiety.
Dairy products
Research has found dairy can increase anxiety symptoms in people already suffering from the mental health issue within minutes of consuming dairy products. Some people may also find it hard to digest the casein found in cow's milk. Dairy can trigger inflammation in the digestive system, which can cause stress in the body, including the brain. It can also cause constipation, bloating, and diarrhoea.
Refined carbohydrates
Bread, rice, pasta and cereal are the kind of refined carbohydrates that increase your blood sugar, which can cause symptoms of anxiety. Opt to consume foods that can help stabilize your blood sugar and are high in protein and fibre.
Coffee
Coffee may be your regular morning pick-me-up, but it can heighten your anxiety response. This is because it is loaded with caffeine, which increases your blood pressure, heart rate and even your body temperature. Symptoms of anxiety are similar to responses to caffeine. Opt to drink green juice or herbal tea along with your breakfast.
Fried foods
Fried food not only tastes delicious, but it is also super comforting. While it may contain ingredients that make for a magical blend, it also contains unhealthy fats that trigger anxiety and depression.
Soda
If you are suffering from anxiety, stay away from soda. It contains two culprits of the mental health issue - caffeine and artificial ingredients. An artificial sweetener known as aspartame is found in the popular beverage, which can prevent the production of serotonin in the brain and as a result, cause one to experience mood swings and headaches.
Processed Food
Processed foods may be the easiest foods to consume after a long day when you don't want to spend too much time in the kitchen. However, they contain preservatives, artificial sugars, refined sugars, and colour dyes that are harmful to your gut health. This, in turn, could contribute to you experiencing chronic anxiety. If you have a hectic day ahead of you, choose a fruit salad, which is packed with nutrients that your body needs.
Consult with your doctor before making any changes to your diet.
