From the time movie-making started in India, historical movies were always in the fad. Bollywood has produced some really great historical movies which take us back in history. Here is the list of five historical movies from Bollywood you can’t afford to miss.
Mughal-E- Azam (1960)
Directed by K. Asif Mughal-E- Azam is considered as one of the greatest movies ever made in India. Set in the Mughal Era it was a love story between a prince and a dancer girl from the royal court.
Mughal-E- Azam had an ensemble cast featuring Prithviraj Kapoor as Emperor Akbar, Dilip as Prince Salim and Madhubala as Anarkali. It was the costliest movie of that time and it took sixteen years to complete the movie. Today it is regarded as a classic and many consider it as the greatest movie ever made in Bollywood. Everything from the performances, sets, costumes, music was top-notch in the movie.
Lagaan (2003)
Lagaan is one of the three movies from India which was nominated in the Academy Awards. Set during the British Raj in the 1890s, Lagaan was directed by AshutoshGowariker and produced by Aamir Khan.
Lagaan was a fictitious movie set during the British era and starred Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh in lead roles. The story follows the poor farmers of Champaner area who have to defeat British in the game of cricket to save themselves from paying tax to the British government. It was a huge success when released and it was nominated in the Oscars, being only the third Indian movie to achieve this feat.
BajiraoMastani (2015)
Directed by Sanjay LeelaBhansali, Bajirao-Mastani was a love story between PeshwaBajirao of the Maratha kingdom and a half Muslim princess Mastani.
Bajirao- Mastani starred Ranveer Singh as BajiraoPeshwa, DeepikaPadukone as Mastani, and Priyanka Chopra as Kashibai. The movie was a huge success when released and lauded for the performances of the lead actors, sets, costumes, war sequences, and music. The movie was dragged through a lot of controversies until it came out as a winner on the other side.
Jodhaa Akbar (2008)
Jodha Akbar was a story about the unusual union between a Mughal King (Akbar) and a Rajput Princess (Jodhabai).
The movie was directed by AshutoshGowariker who directed the classic Lagaan earlier. The movie featured Hrithik Roshan as the Mughal Emperor Akbar and Aishwarya Rai as the Rajput Princess Jodhabai. The film takes a look at the interfaith romance between Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar and the Rajput princess, Jodhaa Bai. The film also explores Akbar’s tolerance and inclusivity of other faiths across his own agenda and policies.
The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)
The Legend of Bhagat Singh was based on the life of famous Indian revolutionary Bhagat Singh who gave his life for the country at the young age of twenty three.
In 2002, three films were made on the life of the great revolutionary Bhagat Singh but the film that stood out amongst them all was Ajay Devgn starrer The Legend of Bhagat Singh. The movie didn’t do well at the box office when released but it received lots of critical acclaim and Ajay Devgn won the National award for the best actor that year.
