India is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, with a rich history and culture along with contributing a lot to shaping the world in ways you perhaps couldn’t imagine. Hence, it is not unexpected that India gave lots of important inventions to the world. Here are five of the most remarkable inventions can thank India for.

The Zero 

Indian astronomer and mathematician Aryabhata created the symbol for zero in 458 A.D. and afterward, this number was acknowledged universally as a suitable digit. 

Before Aryabhata, who is considered one of the greatest mathematicians and astronomers ever, gave a symbol to the number zero we use today. Zero can be considered the most important invention in the history of mathematics. Zero means nothing without it, there would have been no binary system and consequently, no computers. Indians were the first who used ‘Zero’ as a symbol in mathematical operations, like addition, subtraction, etc.

Shampoo

Shampoos are very helpful to wash your hair as it washes away dirt from your hair along with making it healthy and shiny. You must be surprised to know that Shampoo was invented by Indians some 300 years ago. 

The world should thank India, especially the womenfolk as shampoo was first invested and used in India which helps in keeping your hair dirt free and makes them silky and shiny. Even the word ‘Shampoo’ came from the Indian word champi which means head massage. It was invented in the year 1762 during the Mughal era. People used to mix natural oils and herbs to wash their hair and later the west adopted it and started calling it shampoo.

Yoga

One of the most important things India gave to the world is Yoga, a kind of exercise that helps people to be healthy, both physically and mentally.

Yoga is mentioned in the ancient scriptures of India and it’s believed that it was introduced by Lord Shiva and he is regarded as the Adiyogi which means the first yoga guru. Yoga is being practiced in India for at least 5,000 years ago. Unlike other types of exercise also helps in your spiritual and mental growth along with keeping you fit and fine physically. Today, yoga is practiced all over the world for healthy living. People are getting aware of it and it has become so famous that every year the world celebrates ‘International Yoga Day on June 21.

Buttons

Buttons were first used by Indians in the Indus Valley Civilization around 5,000 years ago from today. 

You may be astonished to know that buttons were used in India since ancient times. Archeologists found that buttons made from shells with two holes in the middle were used in Mohenjo-Daro, during the Indus Valley Civilization period, around 2000 B.C. It was used usually for ornamental purposes but gradually people started using them for fastening clothes.

Water on the Moon

It was the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft from India that first discovered the existence of water on the Moon.

It’s not that India invented and discovered things in the past only. India is no way less than any other country when it comes to science and technology today. India was the first country that proved the existence of water on the surface of the moon. Under the supervision of ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), India launched Chandrayaan-1 Spacecraft to the moon and detected water on the moon in September 2009. It was a breakthrough in the history of space exploration as earlier it was believed that in our solar system water exists only on the earth. It is considered as one of the greatest contributions of India to modern space exploration.
