Five Light Hearted Movies of our Parents’ Era You can Watch Instead of Today’s “New Age Cinema”. (Part I)

During the 70s and 80s Bollywood gave some of the best light hearted movies you can watch even now. We have compiled a list of five such movies which you can watch with your family without being embarrassed.

Anand (1971)

Anand featured Rajesh Khanna in the titular role and Amitabh Bachchan in a supporting role. The movie will make you smile throughout the movie and eventually makes you cry at the end.

Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the film features Rajesh Khanna in the titular role. The film tells the story of Anand who won’t live more thansix months because of cancer and how he makes the rest of his life a memorable oneand spread joy along the way. Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of a doctor who has pessimistic views about life as he has seen poverty and death very closely. Even after so many years of its release, it’s still relevant and teaches us the biggest lesson of life, “Life should be bigger and not longer”. Death is only a matter of few moments but in the fear of death you can’t miss the countless moments life has blessed you with.

Bawarchi (1972)

Bawarchiis a slice of a life movie featuring Rajesh Khanna in the titular role. Bawarchi with its simplicity, humor, family values and entertainment quotient, is a perfect movie to watch with family.

Bawarchiwas directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee who is known for making light hearted movies with an underlying message. In Bawarchi, Rajesh Khanna plays ‘Raghu’ a cook of a dysfunctional joint family whom he teaches to live together with happiness. The movie had many life lesson moments but the best one is the when Raghu says, “It’s very simple to be happy but very difficult to be simple”. It teaches us that in the search of big moments of our lives, we forget to enjoy the small yet important moments of our lives.

Choti Si Baat (1975)

Long before Salman Khan in Partner, we had suave Ashok Kumar playing love guru to the simple AmolPalekar. Chhoti is Baat is a small feel good movie which you can enjoy even now as it has not dated at all.

Directed by BasuChatterjee ,Choti Si Baat is the story of Arun  played by AmolPalekar, a shy, reserved and under confident man who is in love with a beautiful girl, Prabha(VidyaSinha). Amol was not able to confess his feelings to Prabha because of his reserved and introvert nature. At this juncture, comes Julius Nagendranath (Ashok Kumar) who trains Arunthe right way to woo a girl. The story seems similar to the the Hollywood movie Hitch starring Will Smith and Partner starring Salman Khan but since Choti is Baat was released much earlier, we can assume that Ashok Kumar is the original love guru before Will Smith and Salman Khan.
