Gujarati cuisine is a delightful amalgamation of unique flavors, colors, and lip-smacking taste. Gujarati food is mostly vegetarian based but it is no way less fancy or tasty. Here we will discuss the five most popular Gujarati dishes you should not miss:

Dhokla 

Probably the most famous Gujarati dish, this healthy and tasty food is prepared using fermented rice and cheakpeas.  

The ultimate Gujarati food, the Soft and spongy dhokla is one of the eaten and famous Gujarati food items. Preparing dhokla is quite simple and it is delicious as well as healthy. It is prepared by fermented rice and chickpeas, Dhokla is best consumed with Green Chutney (made of coriander or mint) or Meethi Chutney (made of Dates and Tamarind).

Thepla

Thepla is a type of thin paratha that is prepared using gram flour, whole wheat flour, fresh fenugreek leaves, and spices. 

Along with Dhokla, Thepla is the most famous Gujarati food; it is a simple food that is easy to prepare but is quite rich in taste. Thepla is a healthy snack served mostly with pickle or fresh curd. When served with a cup of steaming hot tea, it also makes a splendid breakfast or a good snack during the monsoon. No Gujarati picnic is complete without Theplas and you can find them in almost all Gujarati households.

Undhiyu

Undhiyu is a winter delicacy that is prepared using eggplant, fried chickpea flour dumplings, potatoes, yam, green peas, bananas and beans. 

Undhiyu is a one-pot vegetable pot dish that is the hallmark of Gujarati vegetarian cuisine. It is prepared in earthen clay pots that give it a unique flavor. Eggplant, fried chickpea flour dumplings, potatoes, yam, green peas, bananas and beans are used while preparing Undhiyu. Additional ingredients like coconut, buttermilk and various spices are used to augment its taste and flavor. It is mostly served with shrikhand and puris.

Fafda

Fafda is a well-known Gujarati snack prepared with gram flour, turmeric and carom seeds. It is fried till it turns crispy and tastes best when served with chutney.

Fafda is every Gujarati's dream cheat-day breakfast. It is a crunchy, fried chickpea flour snack. Almost every street corner in Gujarat, esp. Ahmedabad has a shop selling it. It is mostly combined with Jalebi, a sweet dish and enjoyed by people of all ages in Gujarat. It is slwoly becoming famous outside Gujarat also because of the hugely popular daily soap 'Taarak Mehta kaUltaChashma'.

Gota

 Gota is a type of pakoda that is a speciality during the festival of Holi. It is prepared using gram flour and fenugreek leaves.

Gota was originated from the village of Dakor in Gujarat and is the Gujarati version of the famous snacks, the yummy, crispy, golden-colored Pakodas. It is easy to prepare and served with ketchup or chutney made from tamarind and dates. Gota is loaded with delightful flavors and serves as a great snack recipe during family get togethers and parties.
