Five Soul Shattering Movies which will Make you Think about the World we Inhabit (Part II)

Requiem for a Dream (2000)

Requiem for a Dream is undoubtedly one of the most depressing movies ever. It tells about the repercussions of drug addiction and how it effects the life of the user and people related to him/her.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, Requiem for a Dream is not a movie for the faint-hearted. It’s a very dark movie that shows the destruction drugs bring in lives of addicted people. What makes this movie so hard hitting is that there is light at the end of the tunnel, no redemption and no coming back. It’s not a sugar coated movie like most of the movies about substance abuse where the main characters go back to normal life as it’s very rare in reality and in real life there are mostly no happy endings. Life is harsher than what is shown in movies and Requiem for Dream shows the dark truth of drug abuse. The movie is too hard to watch, too graphic, and too real. The main characters try get back their lives back to normalcy but it’s of no avail. They descend into tragedy and the ending is will make you think for days to come as you can’t let it go off your mind easily.

Ugly (2015)

Anurag Kashyap who is known for making dark and realistic movies and with Ugly he went full throttle. Ugly is a reflection of the today’s times where people use other people for their personal gains and each of us has dark side, beneath the face we show to the society.

Ugly can be considered as one of the best movies of Anurag Kashyap but it didn’t get the due it deserved. Ugly as the name suggests is a movie that shows that each of us has a dark and ugly side which we don’t show to others and may be even you are not aware of your dark side. In the movie Rahul Bhatt plays a struggling actor who is a divorcee andhe lives with his daughter named Kali.TejaswiniKolhapuri plays the role of his ex-wife who is now married to a sadistic police officer played by Ronit Roy. Things get wary when Kali went missing and all characters in the movies uses the case of Kali for their own benefits. In their schemes to milk most out of this case, they almost forgot Kali and her faith. The final revelation about the faith of Kali shatters everyone including us audiences and it makes us think about the kind of world we are living in.
