Five Things to Check Before Signing Out at Work

Easy ways to sort your work life and give yourself a sense of accomplishment to resume work on the next day

Corporate bigwigs have vouched for these essentials before you physically or digitally sign off for the day!

Glance through Next Day’s Schedule

Mentally sort through the next day’s tasks and to-dos before you leave the space. Trust me, dreading the inevitable till the last moment will not calm your stress levels. Besides, being cognizant of your next day’s tasks is the first step to prepping a mental note of all that has to be done and save yourself from the pile of pending tasks. This little habit makes you organised and declutters your mind. With a certain optimism, look forward to all that has to be done on the next day before you sign out.

Check with Colleagues

The warm smile and goodbye are wee more than a mere formality. These are gestures of cordiality and empathy. Depending on the workspace equation you share with peers and seniors, a quick chat to double-check if everything is updated or peers are doing good helps you stay on the same page. Leaving on a positive note detangles through confrontations or heated arguments that you may have had earlier in the day.

Clean the Space

It is somewhat rude and haughty to leave the desk amidst a heap of discarded paper and all sorts of junks. It is even more detestable if you are dependent on the sweepers to clean after the mess. It also shows irresponsibility and contempt towards your job. Toss away the trash, straighten up the desk and organise before you leave. Mentally, this is pretty refreshing as you arrive in the morning. Art of decluttering is valid for sorting through the digital space as well, and especially if the inboxes are overflowing, and you cannot skip on the important notifications.

Disconnect from Work

As you leave for home, emotionally dissociate from work anxieties and troubles. Meditate on the way and breathe in. Be mindful of the present and do not contemplate work. Since obsession and over-thinking will hardly solve workplace complexities, commit to regular de-stressing and detoxing to retain efficiency and vigour on the next day.

Create a Fresh To-Do

A persona to-do list to list the next day’s work or reflect in advance the month’s task keeps you ahead in the game. You may also jot down the skills to master or challenges to overcome to achieve finesse at your job. The practice gives you a fresh perspective on both personal and professional growth.
