Worcestershire sauce.

There is a very interesting tale behind the creation and the name of the world-famous sauce. It is said that in 19th century England, many men from the military who were now retired attempted to recreate the pungent sauces they had grown accustomed to during their stay abroad. One of them, named Sir Marcus Sandy, made something out of molasses, garlic, vinegar. Tamarind and many other spices. He then took his concoction to his grocer in the town of Worcester, which was a shop called Lea and Perrin. And there, they started manufacturing the sauce commercially and named it Worcestershire sauce.

Mayonnaise.

For this one, there are many versions of how the creamy dressing we all love today came to be known as Mayonnaise. But one of the popular versions says that the sauce was called Mayonnaise inrecognition of Mahon, which was the capital of Minorca. It was captured by the French in the year 1756 after the seven years’ war after defeating the British.
