Some of the best-known players in the world are relatives of each other
Diego Maradona and Sergio Aguero- The late great former football star Diego Maradona and Argentine star striker Sergio Aguero are related to each other. In 2009, the former Manchester City striker married Giannina Maradona, the youngest daughter of Diego Maradona. Together, the couple had a child named Benjamin Aguero. However, the couple went on their ways in 2015, which did not go well with Diego.
Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero’s son- Apart from having a family connection with the Maradona family, Sergio Aguero also shares a family connection with the greatest of all time Lionel Messi. When Benjamin Aguero, Sergio Aguero’s son was born; the latter requested Lionel Messi to be the former’s godfather. Lionel Messi agreed and since then, Aguero is linked to the Messi family.
Philippe Coutinho and Juninho- Much may not be aware that former Middlesbrough player Juninho is a distant cousin of present-day star midfielder Coutinho. Juninho was a renowned player in the 90s and he held the record for the highest number of goals scored by a Brazilian in the Premier League. Surprisingly, it was Juninho’s distant cousin Coutinho who broke the record.
Thiago Alcantara and Rafinha- Given the difference in the last names and their international teams, much may have missed the fact that Thiago and Rafinha are brothers. Born to World Cup winner Brazilian father Mazinho, Rafinha dropped his Alcantara name and represented the nation of Brazil like his father. Thiago kept the Alcantara name but represented a different nation. Thiago plays for Spain.
Sturridge family- The modern-day football fans are aware of the heroics of Daniel Sturridge. However, much may not be aware that his two uncles were football players too. In the 80s, Simon Sturridge and Dean Sturridge were household names in England.
James Rodriguez and David Ospina- Last but not least, Colombian star James Rodriguez was the brother-in-law of Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina. In 2011, Rodriguez married Ospina’s sister Daniela who is a volleyball player. However, the couple went separate ways.
