Four Common Baking Mistakes to Know

Knowing and fixing the blunders that recur in the creative pursuit of baking

Baking is the art of putting together and concocting ingredients as if you are brewing some kind of magic potion. Since baking does not require skill and intuition, it is all fun and games… well until it is not. This sensory experience which requires an active engagement of all our five senses is a delightful journey. With the cognizance of its anticipated errors, we could not merely speed up the process but enhance the taste of the end product.

Looking at the four common baking errors and brainstorming the ways by which those could be prevented.

Adding Key Ingredients but at the Wrong Temperature

If timing is not maintained with the mixing and infusion of ingredients, it meddles with the entire process. Mixing condiments at the wrong temperature tampers with the taste and texture; for instance, if the dough is used at room temperature, instead of hardening, it would melt and turn brittle. This is why following the sequence and stipulated measures for temperatures become an integral part of following the recipe.

Checking the Oven too Often

Opening the oven for a quick peep at the dish might be tempting but wrong. This incredibly addictive practice disturbs the inside temperature because every time the oven is opened, hot air escapes. Using an oven temperature might be a wise alternative to checking in manually and spoiling the delight.

The Cake is Left Unbaked

When the cake is not let to bake fully, it sinks and crumbles within five minutes after cooling – a truly heart-breaking scene. This disaster is rampant with amateurs but could be absolutely prevented. One strategy is to insert a toothpick at the centre of the cake to check the cake is well-baked and ready to be served. If the toothpick comes out clean, you are good to go! If not, leave the cake for a couple of minutes inside the oven.

Cookies are Let to Overbake and Burn

Cooking the cookie dough for too long damage the colour and texture. The remedy? Let them be inside the oven because overbaked cookies do taste delish. As far as the burnt part is concerned, scrape off those parts with a knife once the cookies have completely cooled down. The same rule is applicable when the muffins naggingly stick to the pan. Turn over the pan and tap the bottom or submerge the bottom of it in hot water and try tapping.
